Encephalic Cleansing is the name I give to my spontaneous works originally produced using gouache paint on watercolour paper

This cathartic pursuit has expanded into a form of embroidery using unbleached calico and black thread.

At this point, I began alternating between leading with my right and left hand to reduce muscle fatigue in my hand and arm. Hours often pass unnoticed while I’m fully absorbed in sewing. Naturally right-handed, I make an effort to involve my left hand in these activities as much as possible.

My Wish

Painting & animation by Gaynor Perry

We can quickly be swallowed up by this digital labyrinth, losing touch with the subtle impulses and rhythms of our being. The noise of the outside world can overwhelm the senses, causing us to feel estranged from ourselves.

In My Wish, we follow Agatha and her shadow self as they skip through a surreal landscape, singing their song.

The song first emerged from the seed of a dream, which was followed by a painting titled A Soothsayer Lately. I researched various animation techniques, but since it can get quite complicated, I decided to settle on the simple method I had used in my previous animation, Agatha’s Secret. This involved creating frames in Photoshop and importing them into iMovie.

I hardly know myself
What is a name but a ghostly refrain
I live in a conch shell
A giant conch shell
Suspended between the I and the me

We love, we grieve umpteen impermanent desires
Cast away this sorry scheme of things entire

We float, we trawl
enthralled by transient desires
We want, we crave
enslaved by primal powers
We come undone
hard won and instantly devoured
My wish unseen adrift

My wish, my wish adrift
Hello, hello, hello shadow

La, la, la, la
We love, we grieve
We love

My wish, my wish adrift
Hello, hello, hello shadow

Subliminal Artefact

Subliminal Artefact #1
wood, jute twine, unfired clay

Labouring under the sun, with red kites gliding and whistling overhead, I’ve been immersed in a kind of medieval recall, compelling me to whittle wood. The shape of the wood demanded natural twine, which I am weaving, winding, and plaiting. These sticks were collected from a nearby woodland.

Instinctively assembled, these artefacts have no practical purpose. They serve as an echo, reminiscent of a time when we were deeply connected to the land, governed by the seasons and feudal lords. Back then, contraptions were crafted to accomplish everyday tasks using readily available materials.

These simple objects stand as a totem—a tactile connection to nature and our long-forgotten tasks.

Gravel Pit Understories

After work I found a quiet spot in an old, overgrown gravel pit. Using leaf litter, and whatever natural debris is strewn about me, I’m meditatively organising these things until a sense of harmony is reached.

The sound textures accompanying the film clips were created using my voice in a similarly free and spontaneous manner, conjuring up how it felt to compile each ephemeral array.

Beginning this land art project emerged from a desire to further develop my encephalic cleansing practice while spending meaningful, tactile time immersed in nature.

While piecing together the final assemblage, I repeatedly heard popping sounds in the long grass around me. At first I thought it was twigs falling from the trees, but I soon realised it was seed pods exploding. This became evident when the seed pods I had placed in the gravel pit portal burst right before my eyes, taking me by surprise.
