Where Is The Music?

Blue Agatha character performance by Gaynor Perry

This piece draws inspiration from a nocturnal excursion in which I found myself composing a piece of music. One of the dream’s characters, Diamond John, asked where the music was coming from. It felt as though the tune was writing itself, flowing through me effortlessly.

Diamond John, an enigmatic statuesque figure, transformed before my sleeping eyes into a young boy. I journeyed with him to a dramatic cliffside, where magnificent hawks soared, their spirited cries piercing the sky. Enchanted by these avian gods, Diamond John stretched out his hand to touch them and lost his balance.

In that moment, bathed in the molten glow of sunset, his form was transfigured—mid-pivot—petrified, cast in bronze by the dying light. As if time itself had surrendered to the sun’s embrace.

A crowd gathered at the cliff’s edge to witness the spectacle, led by a shaman named Blue Agatha. "Why don’t you cast a spell to free him?" I asked her.

Throughout this vision, the music continued to play, and Blue Agatha took up Diamond John’s question: "Where is the music coming from?”

If this question can be answered, Diamond John will be released by the metaphysical magic of realisation.

Blue Agatha

To visually represent this experience, I augmented three of my oil paintings in Runway: She Spoke With Fingers Unwound, Our Colloquy and We Set Sail. These paintings belong to a series titled Golden Colloquy, each illustrating a poem and depicting a dialogue with the subconscious. These dialogues emerged through altered states of consciousness—lucid dreaming, astral projection—offering glimpses into hidden landscapes within the spire of the soul.

She Spoke With Fingers Unwound

I created Blue Agatha by transposing original oil painting elements onto an image of myself, ensuring she retained a semblance of humanity suitable for Act One—an AI tool that utilises a “driving performance,” footage of myself performing the song. In this way, Blue Agatha exists as a colourful shard of my being.

Imagination is not reserved for the gifted few—it is an innate force within all of us, capable of shaping reality. Many believe they lack imagination, but consider this: if you can write a shopping list, anticipate what you might need, or picture an event before it happens, you are already engaging with an imaginative space in your consciousness.

Our Colloquy

Like a muscle, imagination strengthens through use, expanding into vivid worlds, transformative visions, and creative realities. This audiovisual work invites you to explore that space—to recognise the mystical properties of imagination and its subtle power when aligned with intent.

Creativity can be harnessed for personal and collective transformation. Every thought, every vision, every small shift in perspective carries the potential for change and healing, sending ripples of influence through our environment.

We Set Sail

The desire for change often arises from discomfort, and suffering itself becomes a motivating force. Imagination offers a powerful substrate for solutions—ideas that emerge from within, untouched by external limitations. When we inhabit the ideas that resonate most deeply, they take root in reality, guiding our passage through life.

URANIA

This song explores the phenomenon of astral projection.

Music written, performed, produced & mixed by Gaynor Perry

Film, photography and concept by Gaynor Perry

Imagery amplified by Runway

For me, producing a piece of music is like creating a sculpture. I consider the overall sound in spatial terms with special attention to width, depth and tonal substance.

Assembling the lyrics is a puzzle to solve with each word carrying a certain weight, suspended along the timeline like an unusual piece of jewellery, if you will. Vocal harmonies form pendants or pendulums augmenting the expression of the song.

I strive for each layer to be distinct with different sound elements weaving in and out of the mix. In this way I hope to create a textured and immersive listening experience.

I work intuitively in all my creative pursuits. These things are an aspect of me hewn from my personal experiences, and I sense in my body when a piece feels complete.

Urania is one of the nine Muses in Greek mythology, specifically the Muse of astronomy. She’s the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, and is associated with universal love and the ability to foretell the future by the arrangement of constellations.

We can call upon Urania in our pursuit for celestial knowledge and exploration of the stars.✨

I’ve been a child all my life it’s nothing I hide it’s all in my light
Visions I’ve seen they glow in the dark unfold in the night
If I could show you how I feel my substance is surreal
A Russian doll is who I’ve been all my years concealed within

I’m chasing the Milky Way shape-shifting every day
Come with me Steal away, steal away In the starlight tonight

Outside is the transient realm where time reigns supreme and love is the lines on my face
What I reach for within is eternity where love is the language of space

Come with me and find Urania
I’m chasing the Milky Way shape-shifting every day
Come with me steal away, steal away in the starlight tonight
Come with me our love is here
All love is here for you

The process of creating each of my artworks—whether it be a painting, a piece of music, or a film—shapes who I am and how I present myself to the world.

I am transformed, energetically linked to my creations by invisible threads. Through these connections, my art becomes an integral part of my daily life, influencing how I relate to the people, animals, and nature around me.

Creative expression feels like a spiritual journey for me. Whether my work is widely known isn't what's important; it's the act of creating that truly matters.

Urania reflects my deep fascination with the interconnectedness of humanity, the cosmos, and spiritual exploration. Inspired by Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, this piece delves into themes of celestial connection, personal transformation, and the shared longing to understand our place in the universe. Through music I created, alongside a film and photographic concept I developed, I sought to craft an immersive experience that bridges the earthly and the celestial. The imagery, amplified by Runway, further enhances the visual narrative, inviting viewers to reflect on the mysteries of existence, both vast and intimate.

In my interpretation, the bear and falcon are central to Urania's story, symbolising a balance between grounded wisdom and elevated vision. These symbols are not tied to any one tradition but rather represent universal qualities that resonate across cultures and perspectives. The bear embodies strength, courage, and introspection, grounding us while fostering renewal. The falcon, by contrast, represents vision, freedom, and the pursuit of higher understanding, offering clarity and inspiration to soar beyond earthly concerns. Together, these symbols celebrate the harmony between personal growth and the infinite possibilities of exploration.

The project draws deeply on personal experiences, particularly out-of-body journeys that have brought moments of healing and liberation. These journeys are preceded by a euphoric state that creates a sense of untethering from the physical body. This exhilarating sensation served as the inspiration for the music production, through which I aimed to convey a feeling of effervescent energy and unbound freedom, capturing the joyous and transformative essence of these astral experiences.

With Urania, I hope to inspire viewers and listeners to reflect on their own journeys through love, transformation, and the cosmos, finding unity between the seen and the unseen, the grounded and the infinite.

Encephalic Cleansing is the name I give to my spontaneous works originally produced using gouache paint on watercolour paper

This cathartic pursuit has expanded into a form of embroidery using unbleached calico and black thread.

At this point, I began alternating between leading with my right and left hand to reduce muscle fatigue in my hand and arm. Hours often pass unnoticed while I’m fully absorbed in sewing. Naturally right-handed, I make an effort to involve my left hand in these activities as much as possible.

My Wish

Music written, performed, produced & mixed by Gaynor Perry

Painting & animation by Gaynor Perry

We can quickly be swallowed up by this digital labyrinth, losing touch with the subtle impulses and rhythms of our being. The noise of the outside world can overwhelm the senses, causing us to feel estranged from ourselves.

In My Wish, we follow Agatha and her shadow self as they skip through a surreal landscape, singing their song.

The song first emerged from the seed of a dream, which was followed by a painting titled A Soothsayer Lately. I researched various animation techniques, but since it can get quite complicated, I decided to settle on the simple method I had used in my previous animation, Agatha’s Secret. This involved creating frames in Photoshop and importing them into iMovie.

I hardly know myself
What is a name but a ghostly refrain
I live in a conch shell
A giant conch shell
Suspended between the I and the me

We love, we grieve umpteen impermanent desires
Cast away this sorry scheme of things entire

We float, we trawl
enthralled by transient desires
We want, we crave
enslaved by primal powers
We come undone
hard won and instantly devoured
My wish unseen adrift

My wish, my wish adrift
Hello, hello, hello shadow

La, la, la, la
We love, we grieve
We love

My wish, my wish adrift
Hello, hello, hello shadow

Subliminal Artefact

Subliminal Artefact #1
wood, jute twine, unfired clay
w36 x h32 x d8 cm

Labouring under the sun, with red kites gliding and whistling overhead, I’ve been immersed in a kind of medieval recall, compelling me to whittle wood. The shape of the wood demanded natural twine, which I am weaving, winding, and plaiting. These sticks were collected from a nearby woodland.

Instinctively assembled, these artefacts have no practical purpose. They serve as an echo, reminiscent of a time when we were deeply connected to the land, governed by the seasons and feudal lords. Back then, contraptions were crafted to accomplish everyday tasks using readily available materials.

These simple objects stand as a totem—a tactile connection to nature and our long-forgotten tasks.

Nahven, my spider daughter

Nahven, my spider daughter
 h80 x w80 x d1cm, oil on board

Just her legs.

These paintings are facets of the different me’s, rendered visible in paint. They are where the ‘I’ and the ‘me’ truly reside.

I haunted myself as beautifully as I could, holding a mirror to it all—metaphysically speaking. Then, I painted what appeared in the mirror.

Gravel Pit Understories

After work I found a quiet spot in an old, overgrown gravel pit. Using leaf litter, and whatever natural debris is strewn about me, I’m meditatively organising these things until a sense of harmony is reached.

The sound textures accompanying the film clips were created using my voice in a similarly free and spontaneous manner, conjuring up how it felt to compile each ephemeral array.

Beginning this land art project emerged from a desire to further develop my encephalic cleansing practice while spending meaningful, tactile time immersed in nature.

While piecing together the final assemblage, I repeatedly heard popping sounds in the long grass around me. At first I thought it was twigs falling from the trees, but I soon realised it was seed pods exploding. This became evident when the seed pods I had placed in the gravel pit portal burst right before my eyes, taking me by surprise.
